David was my 7th grade teacher at Durham Central School. He was fairly young and drove a VW bug at the time. I remembered going to his home where he lived with his parents. He was a great and caring teacher that got students involved in 4H and even snow skiing. For an eighth grade field trip, David and a few other teachers took us to New York City. I have had a lot of teachers in my life, but I have always remembered David because of his kindness and genuine love for his students. He was a great example of integrity, honor, and moral character. My family moved from New York to Utah where I completed the rest of my junior and high school years. I eventually went on to complete my undergraduate and graduate studies. David was certainly an inspiration to me throughout my life to get as much education as I could and to be a good citizen. I'm sad to hear of his passing, but I was glad to read about all of the great service that he did in his life.

Except for his sister, Marcella, I probably knew David the longest. I too was born in Astoria, Queens and met him first in the Queens Nautical Cadets (not the Boy Scouts). It was David who, visiting home from CU, raved about it so that I enrolled at Colrado. Again, at his urging, I joined the Pershing Rifles and the NROTC.
David and I were frequent companions and shared at least one house in our stay in Boulder. Known as "Battini and Sossi" we often had a late nite pizza at the Gondolier restaurant. David was always competitive and would argue to the death over who got which half of the pizza. What made it all the more amusing was that David never finished his half.
I made one visit to see him in Greenville. It was Winter and very cold and David had the thermostat at 60 degrees. He was a good friend.

David was a friend of mine at the University of Colorado and a member of the Pershing Rifles and the NROTC. David and a number of us rented a home in Boulder. We shared dinner with a sorority next door. One year Robert Vaughn ("The Man From Uncle") and his wife stopped by. David was brilliant and an inspirational figure. Several years ago I saw him on a television report. I regret that I did not get in touch with him. David made the world a better place. I know that all his family and friends in upstate NY appreciate what he did to make the world a better place. May God bless and keep him.

We want to express our deepest sympathy to Dave's sister and to his whole family upon Dave's untimely death. This sad news came to us as we were attending a family gathering in Wisconsin, and it came as if a bolt of lightning. I had known Dave for 49 years, having met him at Camp Tri-Mount the day Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. I was not a formal student of his, neither was I a member of his Scout troop nor his rescue squad. But our association that began in Scouting and the Order of the Arrow continued as lasting friendship for many years. Dave was an enormous influence on many, many people in his 76 years, and I count myself among them. I can say without hesitation that no one shaped my views on politics, the Church, wine, food, and music more than Dave did. My wife and I last saw him at The Mountain View Brasserie in Greenville, when we dined with him at his favorite table on August 4, 2016 - he brought the wine, Silver Oak (Napa Valley) cabernet sauvignon. That now seems fitting in so many ways, as I will be attending his funeral exactly two years later, to the day.
He passed away in his sleep, while travelling with his Scouts - a finer way to shuffle off this mortal coil would be hard to imagine.
Requiem aeternam dona ei Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ei.
Requiescat in pace. Amen
Good-bye, old friend,
Rusty, Janet, and Colin Patience

I am so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. I knew him when he accompanied our Dave Stuhr on the many trips they took to Philmont. Our boys accompanied them and got to know Dave. A wonderful and giving man of himself in so many ways.
God Bless you Dave, rest in peace.

I had the pleasure of teaching at Cairo-Durham with Dave for most of those 30 years. Dave encouraged my husband Ken to join the Greenville Rescue Squad. We are most grateful for all the years he devoted to Boy Scout Troop 42. He was one of the most influential adults in the lives of our sons who traveled many happy miles in the "Batmobile" RIP Dave - you will be missed by so many! Our condolences to the family.

Our hearts are heavy....we have worked closely with Dave in Troop 42 for many years. He will be sorely missed. His accomplishments are too numerous to mention. I will always smile when I think of his little appointment calendar book (which he could not live without), his garden, his love of wine and wine tasting, the magnificent meals he served us. the delicious "Cherry Bread" at Christmas, his loving care of his Mom 'till her passing, and his love of history & this community. Soar with the Eagles Dave.

A true pillar-of-the-community!
I got to know Dave through my son Mike who was in the Boy Scouts Troop 42. My fond memories of Dave was seeing him with the Boy Scouts at the Memorial Day Parade and the Scout Ham dinner every year.

I had the opportunity to travel to Philmont Scout Ranch in 1978 with Ho-Ho-Kus Troop 54, led by Dave Stuhr, and the Greenville boys - led by Dave Battini. We had an incredible time and stayed close for a number of years thereafter. My younger brother also had the opportunity to go to Philmont with Dave Battini and his crew.
I am constantly amazed at the dedication of leaders like Dave and the hundreds of youth he positively affected during his scouting tenure. His efforts, humor, and positive outlook will surely be missed.

My deepest sympathy to the family. My memories of Dave go back over 40 years and I think food was involved in nearly all of them. Picnics at Tanglewood, Trying new restaurants. And scouting...when Boy Scouts would take over my living room in HMB for a couple of nights on their road trip. All good memories. You are missed.

Dave was a good friend for many years. He was an outstanding leader and volunteer. I will miss our 4-yr. mini-reunions with mutual friends gathering together from N.J., Vt., Australia, and Michigan. Happy memories of yesteryear include those wonderful gourmet meals you cooked for us up in Ira, Vermont. RIP good friend.
