Obituary of Alarik W. Skarstrom

Alarik W. Skarstrom, 76, of Cornwallville, died at home on December 9, 2017. He is survived by his second wife, Lory Frankel, of twenty-eight years, and three children from his first marriage, sons Alarik E. W. Skarstrom and Christopher Skarstrom, married to Jennifer Ley, and a daughter, Elizabeth Hubbard, married to G. David Hubbard III, and three grandchildren, Alexandria, Oscar, and Nason. We all adored him. Born and brought up in Manhattan and Ghent, NY, he resided in Cornwallville for twenty-five years. A retired university professor and editor, he was also a fine poet and writer, as well as an enthusiastic boater. Consolatio 2 Is it that it is so rare, This seeming coming of the summer's air, That it strikes me as eternal? The softness of it all, the nightfall Light seems to fall athwart time's crawl, The moment endlessly vernal. If these will always be there For those for whom I care So very much, Then I have nothing to fear Of the moment I'm not here, Having lost the touch. I could die imagining these hours Of twilight birds and kitchen garden flowers Are there, for Lory, still, Over the hill In the different years to come. —Alarik W. Skarstrom Donations can be made to Community Hospice of Columbia/Greene Counties or Eddy Visiting Nurse & Rehab Association. Condolences can be posted at ajcunninghamfh.com.
