I remember sitting next to Alarik when Leroy Searle was delivering a paper in New York. The audience speakers would get up and announce their name, and the University they represented. This was shortly after Alarik left the U. of R. When he got up to speak he said "Alarik Skarstrom, East 75th Street" (or wherever he lived at the time). Leroy burst out laughing. A great moment. He was a brilliant, aggressive thinker, a great teacher, and made a lasting impression on quite a few of us students. I'm grateful to have known him and studied under him.

I have only just now learned of Alarik Skarstrom's death, and like others who commented recently but belatedly, I want to recognize the profound influence he had on me at the University of Rochester (in the early 70s). He was, to be succinct, inspirational, and I owe my own 40-year career as an English professor to him. I am saddened to hear of his death; it was an incredible gift to have been his student.

Alarik Skarstrom was my professor at the University of Rochester in the late 1960s, where I took a class in Milton from him. At that time I was a Physics major, but after that class I double majored in Physics and English, and eventually I went on for a PhD in English. I am just retired from 37 years teaching literature and writing at North Carolina State University.
I remember him vividly, a young, blond, handsome chain-smoking enthusiast for literature. He made a great impression on me. I am sorry, so belatedly, to hear of his death, but I must honor the man for what he gave me in the brief time that our paths crossed.

Alarik Skarstrom was my favorite instructor at the University of Rochester, teaching Middle English. He even took the time to help me organize content for a required paper. He was a joy to learn from-- we'd carry on conversations in Middle English before class. Reading Chaucer's Canterbury Tales in M.E. was a hoot, even as the other students had no clue what they were reading.
I think of him often, and am sorry to learn of his passing. My condolences to his family & friends.

I had a course with Alarik at U.C. Irvine back in the mid-seventies. It was the single most formative experience of my grad school years. He seemed bit lost in those days, in a dark place, but he taught me more in one class than the rest of my coursework put together, and our conversations outside of class I remember to this day.
