Obituary of Virginia L. South
COXSACKIE – Virginia Lydia Weis South passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at The Pines in Catskill surrounded by her family. Born in Durham on April 25, 1932, she was daughter of Henry Weis and Lydia Cleveland. Her father died of appendicitis when she was three years old, and she was raised by her mother and stepfather, Bill Stickels. Virginia was also predeceased by her husband, Floyd South on May 22, 1979.
For over 30 years, she drove school bus for Coxsackie-Athens School District. She enjoyed her children from the bus, and would often run into some of them, and reminisce about their days of getting to school. Prior to driving bus, she ran an elder care facility at her home.
Virginia was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt Ginny. Survivors include her daughter, Janice Snyder and companion Fred Kartluke; son Gary South and wife Joann; grandchildren Megan Kreplin (Eric), William Snyder, Jennifer Higgins, Janet Higgins Smith (James), Amanda South; great grandchildren Collin Kreplin, Vincent Boice, Justin Boice, Ryan Ark, Katelyn Smith, Zachary Smith, Angelia Hayden; two sisters, Elizabeth Wood and Mamie Stempel. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews, including Kevin Weis, whose frequent visits made the final months of her struggle a little better. In addition to her parents and husband, Virginia was predeceased by brothers Elmer Lobdell, Floyd Weis and Lloyd Weis.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, February 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 State Route 81, Greenville, followed by a funeral service at 1:15 p.m. Spring burial will be in Round Top Cemetery.
