Obituary of Lieselotte L. Stengel
CAIRO – Lieselotte L. “Charlotte” Stengel, 93, passed away on Sunday, January 20, 2013 at the Pines in Catskill after a brief illness.
Born in Germany on October 31, 1919, she was daughter of the late Richard and Elisabeth Nufer Rickert. While a young woman, Charlotte was a Gold Medalist in the Olympics, and was an entertainer. Charlotte came to America after World War II. She married and the couple lived in Queens. In 1949, the family, which now included their son, moved to Cornwallville. She and her husband owned and operated the former Star Synthetic Manufacturing Corp. in East Durham. Charlotte was an active member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Cairo. She was the manager, for over 60 years, of the Cairo Community Food Pantry, where she derived great satisfaction from helping people. Her activities with the food pantry were featured in the Daily Mail on October 8, 2005.
Charlotte is survived by her daughter-in-law, Barbara E. Stengel; two grandchildren, George C. Stengel Jr. and Barbara C. Stengel Kam; five great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Caleb and Joslyn Stengel, Chai and Kevin Kam; a niece, Anneliese Kelly; and a cousin, Inge Muller. In addition to her parents, Charlotte was predeceased by her husband, George E. Stengel on March 2, 1995, and her son, George C. Stengel on May 30, 2000.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 State Route 81, Greenville. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Cairo. Burial will follow in Cornwallville Cemetery.
