Obituary of Lena H. McDonagh
Lena Agnes Hagan McDonagh passed away suddenly on Thursday, June 29th, 2023 at her residence in East Durham, NY.
She was born November 25th, 1940 in Corbally, Fintona, Co Tyrone in Northern Ireland. She was the 4th of 10 children born to the late Bridget (McBrien) and Joseph Hagan.
She left home at the young age of 15 to work in Belfast before emigrating to New York City in 1958, where she met her late husband, Christopher. They married in 1965 and raised their family of 3 girls in Jackson Heights, Queens. Upon retiring they split their time between East Durham, NY and Madeira Beach, FL.
Lena held many jobs throughout her life, but her favorite job was being a mother. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. She loved her gardening. And she loved her Irish heritage; the music and the dancing. Lena was quite the adventurer, and was willing to go anywhere at any time. In fact she was looking forward to returning “home” to Ireland in a few weeks’ time to visit her family.
Lena is survived by her 3 daughters, Arlene, Deborah, and Collette, her son-in-law Eamonn Noonan, her grandchildren Amanda (Alex), Shannon, Eamonn, Caitlin, Aidan, Christy, and Devon, her siblings Rose and Frank, her sisters-in-law Bridie, Rosaleen, Cecilia, and Catherine, brother-in-law PJ, her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and her cousins.
She is predeceased by her husband Chris, her parents Bridget and Joe Hagan, and her siblings Anna, Seamus, Mary, Tony, Vincent, Bernadette, and Ignatius.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, July 5th, from 5 - 8 pm, at A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 State Route 81, Greenville, NY. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Thursday, July 6th, at 11 am in Our Lady of Knock Shrine, 2052 State Route 145, East Durham, NY, followed by internment in Winston Cemetery in East Durham.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
