Obituary of Leonard W. Sutton

Leonard W. (Red) Sutton, age 85, of Freehold, NY, passed away on August 22, 2021, at Albany Medical Center Hospital. He was born in Ashland, NY, on July 5, 1936, the son of Walter and Luella Tompkins Sutton. After graduating from Windham Ashland Jewett Central School, he enlisted in the US Army, serving from 1954-1957. Upon discharge from the Army, he attended SUNY Oswego and earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. He taught elementary school in New York State for 32 years, mostly at Greenville Central School in sixth grade, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church and the Greenville American Legion #291 where he participated in their honor guard. Red Sutton loved the theater, especially Shakespeare, and was an actor known primarily as a stage performer in New York’s Capital region, although he also had roles in a few film projects. Proud of his Scottish heritage, he rarely missed the Scottish Games dressed in his kilt. In addition, he enjoyed gardening, studying history, and his animals. Red is survived by his wife of 45 years, Bruni Sutton, and six children: Eric W. Sutton, Shawn C. (Nichamon) Sutton, Susan (Curtis) Ehrgott, Debra (Clay) Beattie, Carol (Vlad) Papov, and Dawn (Christopher) Hynes. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, his sister Linda (Robert) Partridge and his brother Raymond (Doris) Sutton and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by daughter-in-law Kay Sutton. He donated his body to Upstate Medical Center for anatomical research. As per his wishes, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to a charity of one’s choice, especially one which benefits veterans or animals. Condolence page is available at ajcunninghamfh.com.
