My daughter was in a near fatal auto accident back in 1980. We had the good fortune to have Dr. Joe on call that day. He took care of her as if she was his own. She had a fixation for frogs back then she was 17. She had imotional issues and some depression during recovery while in the hospital. A bouquet of roses came on day and the card was signed from "Kermit ". We loved him and sincerely mourn his passing. God bless you Dr. Joe.

Dr Fay was like a surrogate Dad to me. I tore my ACL at 17 playing when girls didn’t tear their ACLs. I saw Dr Fay after the first doc I saw said to resign yourself to a life of playing chess. Dr Fay said I will fix you right up and flew down to SC to learn how to go it and picked me out a red brace bc it looked like my color. He was there every day in the hospital and another 25 years until he had to send me on to the doc who gave his wife a new knee. I cried. He may have cried. He said ‘Nawmal’ instead of Normal and would say “Hold on” In a way when leaving the room which I now say to my child and dogs. I said I would invite him to my wedding (but that hasn’t happened quite yet). I will always adore him. Love and condolences to his family. Thank you for him.

Dear Ellen and family,
I had the pleasure of working with Dr Fay for many years at Memorial Hospital. He was not only an amazing surgeon but also one that truly cared about his patients. He was kind and respectful not only to his patients but to all the nurses and support staff. He was certainly one of a kind. I am so very sorry for your loss. Cherish the memories, I know I will of the fun we had working in the Operating Room. Can still see his smiling face...

Dr. Fay was my orthopedic surgeon. I was sent to him by my father, John A. O'Hern, M.D., who had the good fortune to have Dr. Fay as a resident. My father was sparing in his praise of other doctors, but made it clear he thought very highly of Dr. Fay. Dr. Fay was a fine doctor and a fine human being.

It seems odd, in a way, to say that what you just read in an obituary moved you, but this did.
I read a love letter.
From a woman, to her man, her partner, her sparring partner, too.
And she, and many others now know, by her writing, that there was a special bond, and that bond is something that everyone should emulate.
She will join him someday, hopefully not soon.
Imagine the reunion!

Dr. Fay operated on me when I was a kid, back in the mid ’70s. Due to a problem at the hospital, I was sent home to await another surgery in a few weeks, but I was kept in bed during that time. Dr. Fay felt so bad about this (even though it wasn’t his fault) that he made a house call to take care of me and on Labor Day. He left his family picnic to come take care of me. That’s the type of doctor and man he was. When my daughter was initially diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, he was there to help us and give me guidance. He was someone I trusted, always.
About 2 years ago, I ran into Dr. Fay while I was getting physical therapy and he was working out. It was great to be able to see him again and we had a great conversation.
They broke the mold with Dr. Fay. The medical community was a little worse off when he retired, but yet it was brighter than it could have ever been because of him.
I think of Dr. Fay often. Our talks about my paramedic career. Our talks about medicine. Our talks about family. He always had a gentle hand and heart.
On a side note, I loved the obituary. I can see Dr. Fay smiling down on you for that.
God Speed Dr. Fay. You are missed more than you know.

Dear Ellen and the other Fay family members;
We read with sorrow the loving, but sad announcement of Joe's passing. Our family, similar in ages as his and knew each other well. We were enthusiastic skiers and participants with other activities that brought us back, repeatedly to Joe, with some routine, but a few challenging problems. So aside from updating our families' progress, suggested more caution and Joe joked about us enrolling for a family orthopedic discount. However when the injury was drastic and challenging, Joe met us on arrival in the ER, regardless of the time or day, and with genuine concern devised inventive and successful solutions that other doctors admire even these days. He gave many of our family many decades of full mobility and enjoyment. We will long remember his friendship and help.
Sent with our condolences, Ivan Rita Vamos and family.

I do not know your family however we have a daily hobby of reading the obituaries and enjoyed your hysterical and very touching write up. You managed to capture the fun loving people you are in a horrible time which is so needed. I know when we put dad down, our sense of humor helped us. Thank you for the laugh and important message to embrace our loved ones. So very sorry for your loss.❤️

Dr. Fay was a teacher, a colleague, an "all purpose" orthopedic surgeon and a friend. While in nursing school at Albany Med, I would scrub for him in the OR, he was always teaching as we went and always gave a thank you at the end of the surgery. When I was evening nursing supervisor at Albany Memorial, we would often do rounds together and he was always caring and thoughtful with his patients. As "my surgeon" for two different surgeries, all was fully explained and all went well. He was always my choice for orthopedic visits and I was sorry when he retired.
Am sure there is scotch in heaven for him and a Corvette to drive, he will be missed!! Condolences to all who loved him.

While I was friendly with Dr. Fay's son Joe in elementary school, I really only came to know Dr. Fay. when I started my medical career. We had many patients in common, and he always provided them compassionate, thorough, and skilled care. As someone whose own father had the fraught experience of caring for a 1990 Corvette, I am sure he must have been very committed and patient. I am sorry to learn of his passing. My condolences to the entire family.
