Dear Eric, Walter and family,
I was so sorry to hear of Kay's passing, my deepest sympathies are with you at this time. All of my memories of Kay make me smile, she had a uniquely positive energy that made everyone around her happier in her presence. I am sure all of her students would agree with me and that is only one reason why she was such a wonderful teacher!
During our high school years, Kay trained me to become a waitress at our local, family resorts. What special memories these are...setting the tables up in the dining room as the summer sun filtered through the big windows, cracking jokes with the cooks in the kitchen, mixing milkshakes when no one was looking....what fun we had together! On one occasion, I became ill and was sick in bed for a week during the summer. Kay found the time in her busy schedule to surprise me with a home visit and graciously sat by my bedside trying to make me laugh. I always loved Kay for not only that special effort but for all of the times she cheered me up, encouraged me on and remained a genuine friend through all of the drama of the teenage years. She always was calm, wise and trustworthy. I was so happy to hear that she shared her talents and spread her joy in the classroom....I have been a teacher for almost thirty years myself and understand how important good teachers are to children. I am confident that Kay's spirit will live on in so many children's hearts, they will carry her around like a precious seed and then share her with others, her work living on and growing in magnitude forever. She would not want us sad but celebratory....a reminder to us all that our time here is short....let's make it mean something. Sending love and prayers, Alex

On behalf of Natty Bumppo Gregory and me, I wish to jointly offer our condolences to all of you who knew Kay and enjoyed her joyous way through life. Bumppo (or "Nat" to some of you) is GuideFather to my son Gregory (just barely older than Kay), now of Davenport FL, and my daughter Mairye, now of Escondido CA, and is well known to many of you. It has been my good fortune to know Kay, Eric, and Red&Bruni through Bumppo. I spoke with him at length by phone today, working to uplift him from his feelings from Kay's death and sharing pleasant memories of our joint meetings with her. I'm Bumppo's eyes&ears on the Internet, and we agreed that we should add this to the accolades and condolences already published

I will be forever grateful for her caretaking and kindness to Joeleen but, our family as well. Her journey here may be over, but she has started a new one. God bless.

We were saddened to hear of Kay’s passing. The community has lost a wonderful teacher, neighbor, and friend.
I remember when Kay first started teaching at Durham Elementary. My daughter Lacey was her first class and she taught Kristy and Jonathan as well. She is at the top of their teacher list. She was always giving me pictures she had taken of my kids right up to last year.
Whenever I decorate our Christmas tree, I will always think of Kay. The first day of school decoration Kay made of my kids still goes up on the tree.
She was a fabulous teacher and woman. She was a milestone at school and will be missed.
We are so sorry for your loss. We are thinking of you all and are heart sick for your loss.
