What a fine lady she was! I'll always remember Aunt Margaret for her kind and gentle manner, her amazing pies and crust - chocolate and banana cream were my favorites, and her New Jersey accent. I'll never forget her telling the story of when the NY department of motor vehicles didn't send her and Uncle Clyde a bill for registration renewal for their car. She called the DMV to ask where her bill was and how much was due, concerned about being late. The person she spoke with told her, "Mrs. Filkins, you and your husband have already paid", referring to Uncle Clyde's service during WWII and being a POW. It brings tears to my eyes every time I think of it. And that's why they were the Greatest Generation.
