Obituary of Mary V. Murphy

LAKEWOOD, NJ – Mary V. Murphy, 80, passed away on Friday evening, November 9, 2018 at Ocean Medical Center in Brick, NJ, following a brief illness. Born on May 7, 1938 in Fintona, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Bridget McBrien Hagan. Mary emigrated to the United States in 1958 and settled in New York City. A few years later, she married and had two sons. Later, she was a single working mother, employed as a clerk at Sandvik Steel in Fairlawn, NJ. Since retiring, Mary enjoyed living in a senior community in Lakewood. She remained fiercely independent until the very end. Following the celebration of her 80th birthday this spring, Mary had a wonderful week of visiting with family at home in Northern Ireland. Mary's special qualities were that she was quiet, reserved, caring, and selfless. While she often ate like a bird, Mary loved pizza and could easily put away three slices! Mary is survived by her two sons, Brian, his spouse Aida, and their children, Benjamin and Andrew; Kevin, his spouse Karen, and his children, Jared and Jessica; two great-grandchildren, Emma and Colin; four siblings, Lena, Rose, Vincent and Frank. In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by five siblings, Anna, Tony, Seamus, Ignatius, Bernadette. Calling hours will be Saturday, November 17th from 9 until 11 a.m. at A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 State Route 81, Greenville. Funeral Mass will be offered at 12 noon in Our Lady of Knock Shrine, 2052 State Route 145, East Durham, followed by burial in Winston Cemetery.
