Obituary of David C. Stoddard
David C. Stoddard, age 94, died on Tuesday July 10, 2018 at Our Lady of Mercy Care Center. Born on November 26, 1923 in Utica, NY, he was the son of Curtis and Susan Hannah Stoddard. He was predeceased by a brother, William, and infant sons Christopher and Thomas. David served in the U.S. Marines during World War II and was stationed in Guam and China. After his discharge, he attended Ithaca College and graduated with a BA degree in Physical Education. He received an MS degree in Elementary Administration from SUNY Oneonta. After a teaching career in Durham and Greenville Central Schools, he was appointed Elementary Principal of Greenville Central School where he served until his retirement in 1978. His many memberships include 50 years in the American Legion and many years in the Cascade F&AM Masonic Lodge 427. He was an active gardener and member of the Men's Garden Club. He won many awards for his carving of artistic decoys after joining the Mohawk Valley Carving Club. Dave was an avid sailor and enjoyed 20 years of cruising and racing with the Willsboro Bay Sailing Club on Lake Champlain. He created a large model railroad layout which gave him many years of pleasure and challenges. Dave was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Greenville and Norton Hill where he served as a Trustee, a shopkeeper in the Powell Store Thrift Shop and a member of the United Methodist Men.
Dave is survived by his beloved wife, Ethel, daughters Kathleen Smith (Gerard), Sandra George and Yvonne Connelly (Edward); grandchildren Sara George Roth (Will), Brian George and Kimberly Connelly and brother, Norman Stoddard.
A memorial service will be held at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Norton Hill on Friday July 20th at 3pm. Inurnment of his ashes will take place at Saratoga National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send a donation to a charity of their choice. Condolences can be posted at ajcunninghamfh.com.
