Obituary of John W. Whittaker, Sr.
John Wesley Whittaker, Sr., 79 years, long time resident of Greenville, (formerly of Cobleskill) passed away, on Oct. 25, 2010. He was born in Howes Cave, NY on Jul. 9, 1931, son of the late John and Frances (Hogabone) Whittaker. John graduated from Cobleskill Central School in 1950 and joined the US Navy serving aboard the USS Oriskany for four years, during the Korean War. John was employed by the NYS Dept of Corrections as a Corrections Officer from 1962-1989 retiring from the Coxsackie Correctional Facility. After retiring he enjoyed working at Pine Lake Manor Resort until his death. John enjoyed hunting with his sons and grandchildren. He was an enthusiastic supporter of his sons and grandchildrens sporting events. John enjoyed traveling with his wife Jean. He was a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Church in Cobleskill. John was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Whittaker.
Surviving is his wife of 50 years, Janette Karas Whittaker of Greenville and his four sons, John Whittaker, Jr. (Kate), James Whittaker (Maureen), Jeff Whittaker (Sonya) and Mark Whittaker (Carolyn), his grandchildren, Taryn, Johnny, Jeffrey, Kaileigh, Gideon, Caleb, Jeremy and Mark, a brother, Henry Whittaker (Mona), a sister-in-law, Cheryl Whittaker, three nieces and two nephews.
Calling hours will be Thursday, October 28 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, October 29 at 12 noon at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Cobleskill. Burial will follow in St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery in Cobleskill.
