Obituary of Virginia Kellegher

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL – Virginia Kellegher, 73, passed away on Tuesday evening, February 13, 2018 at St. Lucie Medical Center in Port St. Lucie. Virginia was born December 9, 1944 on Staten Island, a daughter of the late John J. and Virginia Cummings Mulcahy. She was a graduate of St. Patrick's Elementary School and St. Louis Academy. She was employed as an executive secretary at Continental Insurance and Transamerica Trailer Transport, both in New York City. In the 1960's, Virginia was awarded a medal for heroism from the Carnegie Association for intervening to stop a man from killing her friend. Virginia married John J. Kellegher in 1974 and came to East Durham to join the Kellegher family business, the Shamrock House in East Durham. Virginia was a communicant of Our Lady of Knock Shrine in East Durham. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the East Durham Volunteer Fire Company. Virginia was one of the founders of the Northeast USA Vietnam Veterans Reunion Association. Virginia and her husband moved to Port St. Lucie in June 2010. Virginia is survived by her husband of 43 years, John J. Kellegher; her siblings, Claire Mulcahy (Michael Oveis), Joan Kanaly (George), and Anne Mulcahy; her uncle, James Mulcahy (Margaret); her aunts, Eileen Lee and Marie Mulcahy; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to her parents, Virginia was predeceased by her sister, Mary Ellen Mulcahy. Calling hours will be Tuesday, February 20th, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 State Route 81, Greenville. Funeral Mass will be offered Wednesday, February 21st at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Knock Shrine, 2052 State Route 145, East Durham.
