Obituary of Philip N. Bates

PRESTON HOLLOW – Philip N. "Phil" Bates, 80, died suddenly Friday, October 20, 2017. Phil was born on January 26, 1937 in Catskill, son of the late Paul and Isabel Goodfellow Bates. He was raised in Potter Hollow and graduated from Middleburgh Central School. Phil was employed as a truck driver for 42 years at Van Auken Express in Greenville, retiring in 1999. He was a life member of the Tri-Village Volunteer Fire Company and was a past chief, serving for 13 years. Phil was the treasurer of Bates Hollow Cemetery and collected postcards. He enjoyed going to postcard shows and learning the history of the postcards. Phil is survived by his wife, Bonnie Cook Bates; daughter, Deborah Hulbert (Gary Wood); sister, Laura Bates; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Phil was predeceased by his brother, Edmund Bates. Phil's wishes were to be cremated privately, with no services.
