I don't have any recent memories of Joe. I remember him from GCS, where I was a classmate of his brother, Bob. In reading Joe's obituary, I would say he will be remembered lovingly and with great pride.
I was in Naval ROTC at Cornell University. During the summer of 1955 I received orders to report to the USS Roanoke CL-145 for a midshipman training cruise. Of course, that included training and practical experience in navigating. When I went to the bridge of that cruiser for the first time, I was very surprised to meet the ship's chief quartermaster, I recognized him immediately. It was Joe Mangold from my home town, Greenville, NY. Joe provided all 200 of us midshipman on board Roanoke with our celestial navigation training over the next couple months. He was an excellent teacher. I thought for sure I would meet up again with Joe some time later in my Navy career but I didn't. I'm happy to see that he also received a commission as a Naval Officer. Bravo Zulu!
