To say Mr. Tyrell was a role model to me and so many other's would be an understatement and not come close to doing justice to expressing what a great man he is. My heart is broken for such a loss to your family, school and community. He is what is missing in todays school systems. He ran a tight ship and we were all better for it because of him. He cared enough to hold us accountable for our actions, good and bad, while encouraging us to do and be our best. I have never forgotten the big man in the hallways who could buckle your knees with a look from those blue eyes if caught misbehaving and the same big man, who took the time to learn all of our names, give you a pat on the back, with that smile of his, for a job well done or to just say hello. Either way, he was our best friend and mentor because he took the time to be. Thank you Mr. Tyrell. Rest in peace. Ken LaPlante.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of "Mr. Tyrrell".
Being a part of the GCS music family was an important part of my formative years. Due to the patience and encouragement of "Mr. Tyrrell", I was able to truly appreciate all forms of music and improve my instrumental skills as a woodwind player. Experiences such as participating in the musicals, concerts, parades, pep bands and early trips to SPAC will live in my memory forever. Thanks "Mr. Tyrrell"
My thoughts and prayers are with you Jeff, Jim and Ken and your families.

My condolences to the family may you know God's comfort in the days ahead. I have such fond memories of high school chorus and the musicals at GCS. Mr. Tyrrell ran a tight ship but was always, as so many others have said before, kind and fair. But most of all I will remember his wonderful wry sense of humor. What an extraordinary life.

I am so very sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. Jim, it has been my pleasure to know you all these years and I hope you find peace in happy memories. My memory of Mr. Tyrell is as my summer music teacher. My parents didn't want me to slack off during the summer so my mom would take me to your house in the afternoon for flute lessons. I really enjoyed your dad's style and his warm personality.

Jeff, Jim and Ken,
I'm so sorry for your loss, your Dad served his church, community and the school for many years. It's very hard to put into words what you feel in your heart. Your Dad made music come alive in many young people who probably drove their parents and him crazy while learning to play. After a few years they would be the rave of the village in the school musical.
This year has been very hard on our community in the loss of so many of the older generation. Your Dad and Mom worked and enjoyed life with David and I in many ways over the years. Please know that you have my deepest sympathy, love and prayers in the loss of your Dad. sincerely Pat Elsbree

Jeff, Jim, and Ken,
As time passes, often way too fast, we put off doing those things that we mean to do before our time is up. Visiting with your father on one of my all too short visits home to Greenville was one of my regrets. Mr. Tyrrell was one of the best teachers I ever had. Not only as a music teacher (especially the flams and the paradildles (drums), but as a human being and a man. One had the highest respect for him as he earned that respect. I often found myself asking, what would someone like Bob Tyrrell do?
My deepest condolences.

I was terribly saddened to hear of your Dad's passing. As a young man he gave me music lessons and later was my teacher and band director at CCS. Later in life we served on the Pioneer Insurance board together. He was a good friend of my father. Another member of the Greatest Generation is gone and we are all the worse for it. He was one of the greatest men I ever met.

Dear Family Members,
I just wanted to express my sincere sympathy on the passing of such a wonderful man. As a student in Greenville in the late 70's I had the privilege of having Mr. Tyrrell as my band leader and then High School Principal. I had the utmost respect for him as a teacher and administrator. He always pushed you to be the best you could be - you could not get away with excuses.
He had a positive influence on thousand of young people. Bob was an amazing asset to the Greenville School District. You don't often see men of his caliber in the world today.
With Deepest Sympathy,
Kathy (Turon) Kieffer (Greenville Class of 1980)

So sorry for your loss, Mr. Tyrrell was a great music teacher and principal. He definitely helped me make it through HS. I loved having him as my principal, he was kind but fair. I was so comfortable with him that I actually would stop in his office, and call him dad! He'd take the time to sit and listen to me when ever I stopped in. Not many teachers or principals would take the time out of their day just to sit and listen when they are so busy. Maybe that was a good thing about a small school too. I'm sure he is heaven bringing beautiful music with him and I'm sure my Mom will be there to welcome him.

I am saddened to hear of Mr. Tyrrell's passing, but remember him fondly. My sister and I took music lessons from him for a number of years. I still remember trying to hit specific notes on the French Horn and Bob regularly saying, "The horn is like a woman, fickle, fickle, fickle." I always giggled at the time. It wasn't until years later that I realized perhaps I should have been mildly offended, but he said it with such adoration for the French Horn that even now, I can only smile in remembrance. He taught me so much about music and discipline. He is firmly one of the first people who put me on my career path towards working professionally in music. I hope he knew how much his teaching made a lasting impression. He will be sorely missed, but never forgotten.

My sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Tyrrell. I had the pleasure of growing up in the United Methodist Church in Norton Hill. He was always a commanding presence, but with a quick and easy Smile that could light up the room. Knowing the Tyrrell's personally, I always had a love for Emilylou; her sweet demeanor and loving personality were always a joy for me when I came home to visit and I always had a great respect for Bob. I am deeply saddened by your loss but am happy that they are together again; ageless and healthy. I can see Bob directing choirs of angels. May he rest in peace.

One of the best!!! Mr. Tyrrell was one of those teachers that left a lasting impression on my life. He was my instrumental teacher for many years and some of my best memories were made in that band room at Greenville Central High School; lessons, band practice, parades, concerts, musicals. A lot of the students were afraid of him but if you were one of his band members you know what a great person he was and behind that stern exterior was a gentle man with a great smile. Thank you for all you did for your students and for promoting music in the school and the community. My sincere condolences to the family.
