Obituary of Raymond P. Kane
Raymond (Ray) Paul Kane, born May 6, 1937 in Cornwall, New York was surrounded by loved
ones as he passed away peacefully on January 25, 2014 after a long battle with cancer.
Ray, the son of George and Lydia Kane, grew up in Newburgh, NY and served in the US Navy
from 1954-1958. Following his service Ray worked for the Firth Carpet Co in Firthcliff, NY where
he met Joan McNamara. They were married in 1961. While working for Firth, Ray and Joan
transferred to Laurens, SC for a year and welcomed their first son Brian. They moved to North
Plainfield NJ in 1962 with Alexander Smith Carpet Co and remained there for five years through
the birth of three more children; Raelene, Darlene and Christopher. In 1968 Ray and his growing
family relocated once again with Mohasco Industries to Diamond Bar, CA where they welcomed
their fifth child, Shannon. While in California, Ray took a position with Allied Food Service as
their West Coast Distibution Manager. After residing on the West Coast for six years Ray and
Joan decided to move back east so that their children could get to know their extended family.
They settled in Greenville, NY. Ray started working for Wolberg Electric in 1974 as Operations
Manager retiring in 2000.
Ray and Joan's love of travelling continued after retirement as they became full time
RVers. They spent the next last 10 years traveling extensively across the country visiting with
friends and family along the way. One of their favorite things to do was to volunteer at Big Bend
National Park in Texas as camp hosts for Cottonwood Campground.
While traveling was a passion for Ray, his family was always top priority. Whether
coaching basketball or little league or as a Boy Scout leader, Ray was always a part of their lives.
His kids reminisce about how no matter what the function was at school or outside Mom and Dad
were always there. Once his kids were gone he transferred this passion to his Grandchildren.
Ray's other interest included; horses, the American West, reading and singing anything
from the oldies, especially the Rat Pack favorites.
Ray is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Joan Kane. Five children and their spouses; Brian
(Traci) Kane, Raelene (Rob) Bond, Darlene (George) Ward, Christopher (Karin) Kane and
Shannon (Donald) Smith. Ten grandchildren: George and Lauren Ward, Ryan (Karen)and
Raeann Bond, Brittani and Erin Kane, Kelly and Doris Kane and DJ and Emma Smith. His
siblings; Bonnie Melvin, Betsy Rodgers, Borden Davis, Richard Davis and RoseMarie Dunning,
and many loved cousins. Ray was predeceased by his parents George and Lydia Kane, brother
