Obituary of Ellen M. Potter
PRESTON HOLLOW – Ellen M. Hillicoss Potter, age 79, passed away on Tuesday, December 24, 2013 at Livingston Hills Nursing Home after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born at home in Preston Hollow on December 16, 1934, she was daughter of the late Edward and Gertrude Marcinak Hillicoss, and wife of the late Earl Kenneth Potter, who died on March 5, 2012. Ellen attended the one-room schoolhouse in Preston Hollow and went on to graduate from Middleburgh High School and Albany Beauty School. She worked as a beautician, drove a school bus, worked at the former Becker Electronics, was a chambermaid at the Weldon House, worked as a rural letter carrier out of the Preston Hollow post office, and ran Potter Farms with her late husband and family. Ellen was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Tri-Village Volunteer Fire Company and a former officer of the Bayard Elsbree Memorial Park.
Ellen is survived by her children, Earl David Potter (Kathy), Karen M. Strobeck (Jud), Michael Potter and Deborah LiVecchi (Joseph); two brothers, Benjamin Hillicoss (Sharon) and Paul Hillicoss (Barbara); eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren with two more on the way; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband and parents, Ellen was also predeceased by a brother, John Hillicoss.
Calling hours will be Sunday, December 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. at A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville. Ellen’s ashes will be buried at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Tri-Village Volunteer Fire Company, Brookside Cemetery Association or Bayard Elsbree Memorial Park will be appreciated. Light a candle at ajcunninghamfh.com.
