A master has left us. I, like many others, was stunned by Mr. Tunison’s passing. As a Licensed Battlefield Guide at Gettysburg while on tour we pass hundreds of monuments daily. However, as important as they all are, Ron’s bronze statues capture the eye of the new visitor with their impressive, lifelike image. His bronze statues are, in my opinion, the most artistic but also, without question, the most difficult to produce. It is the talented hands of the sculptor that brings to life these figures. Mr. Tunison’s works at Gettysburg are second to none! The names of famous sculptors such as Borglum, Bush Brown & Massey Rhind dot the Gettysburg Battlefield but four bronze works at Gettysburg are inscribed with the name of Ron Tunison. I had contacted Ron several years back about gathering information for a website I authored on his Gettysburg sculptures. He was very open and warm and we had several good laughs during our phone conversations. Ron, unselfishly, offered everything he had to help me with the documentation of his works for my site, including original photographs smeared with modeling clay. I am proud to have nine cold cast examples of Ron’s work in my collection. When my cat Winfield knocked over my beloved “Crawford (one of only 63 made) and damaged it I contacted Ron about repairing it. When it was returned to me it looked better than ever and was signed on the back “Ron Tunison. Along with those close to him, we who admire his work will miss him tremendously. His bronze statues at Gettysburg and elsewhere will be his legacy for centuries to come and I will be sure to point out his wonderful talent during my tours. Tim, Linda and Kristen Fulmer – Dixon, IL

I lived next door to Ron all my growing up years. He was like a brother to me. My parents absolutely adored him and Ann and Lois. He has kept in touch with my family all these years and loved my mom and dad as his.
He was wonderful to have as a friend. He would come up with all these ideas for pictures and get all the neighbors together. We always had a great time. He and my brothers and their friends actually dug up Ron's yard and dug trenches all around to get great war pictures. I remember my brothers loved this time with Ron. He would have me and my friends dress up in the victorian era clothing and take great pictures at the park when it was really scary and grey outside! He definately had the eye for the right look!
I am so sorry for Alice, Elizabeth, Trevor and Wesley Lois and all of his extended family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers everyday. Ron was such a wonderful talent and will truly be missed. Ron was the “boy next door. During our growing up years our neighborhood was full of kids playing outside everyday choosing teams between the girls and the boys for baseball in the street during the day and playing tag at night. It was a great healthy fun on Munson Avenue. I have wonderful memories of those days. In between all of that, Ron’s sincere interest in the Civil War era reared its head. He would often gather up of the neighborhood kids and have them dress up in the Civil War outfits and paraphernalia that he collected over the years. He posed them in trenches and on homemade mountainous terrain to duplicate warlike conditions in a simpler way, but the final product actually looked pretty real. The kids loved it and he was in all of his glory. As the years passed, Ron remained very close to my family. He became a third brother to me and a third son to my Mom, Liz, after Ron’s mother, Ethel passed away (or Billie as Mom called her). When Ron married Alice, Mom Liz and Alice became close as well. And when the children came they called her Grandma Liz. Ron, Alice, Elizabeth, Trevor and Wesley are all a part of us. That is why this is such a devastating incomprehensible event. It can’t be that Ron is gone, yet we know this has truly happened and he has moved to the next place. The art world has lost one of its best and we have all lost a wonderful, lovely man who will leave his impression on me forever.

Dear Alice, Olin gave me the very sad news of Ron's untimely passing. Words seem so inadequate, but with this message come my deepest condolences to you and your family.
I will always remember Ron as an incredibly caring, vibrant, talented person, and an absolute joy to have in your presence. One of my fondest memories is when he stayed with Olin and I here in California, on the occasion of Ann's memorial service (1985). When the minister invited anyone in the packed congregation to share thoughts they may have had concerning Ann, Ron proudly stood up and brought the entire room to a combination of tears and laughter as he told stories of what it was like to grow up as Ann's big brother. He was brilliantly captivating, like a Civil War General trying to motivate his beleaguered troops. The following day, Ron, Olin, and I threw Ann's ashes in to the Pacific at a seclude rocky beach near our home. A photo taken that day of Ron
down on one knee, holding young Olin close to his side will always have a prominent place in my family gallery. It was a great comfort for us to have him near at that very challenging time.
May Ron's blessed gift of being the eternal optimist, and bearer of joy and comfort be with you during this very difficult time.
My prayers and thoughts are with you all. Rob Roth

Bless you all,

Reading the poignant memories of those whose lives he touched confirms my personal impression of the sincerity and compassion of Lois' big brother, Ron.
I could hear the love and admiration in her words whenever she talked about him. I soon learned of the the pride and enthusiasm she shared with him for his artwork.
Upon meeting Ron and Alice I found a loving and committed couple in whose company I felt welcome. On subsequent visits I came to know a man whose love of his family, his work and of life was boundless. His interest in Lois' and my lives made us feel privileged to be part of his life.
As with the numerous others who have shared their memories and sympathies here, I too send Alice, Liz, Wesley and Trevor and especially Lois my sincere condolences.
With Ron's passing our world is a little sadder. However, his memory, like his artwork will forever evoke memories of a brother, a father, a husband and an artist whose life was lived fully and who left the world a better place for having shared it with the rest of us.

A Remembrance and Appreciation
Ron and I were introduced by our High School art teacher who said to me-There is a guy in the next class drawing Stuka dive bombers just like you-I think you should meet. That was over 50 years ago!
One thing I liked very much about Ron was that he knew what he was about. He knew what he wanted and was quite willing to work for it.
He wanted to be a sculpter and he was.
He wanted a homestead and a studio on the side of a mountain and he got it.
He wanted Alice to be his wife and have a great family and they have.
Ron and I often discussed how 21st century America is not the easiest place to be an artist but he managed it-with significant help from Alice, of course.
I say, well done Ron and please know that you will be missed by us all.

I will never forget the kindness that Ron and Alice extended to me and my good friend and colleague Tim Karnath during the dedication of the Irish Brigade Monument at Antietam. I was attempting to describe the memorial to Tim (who is visually handicapped), when Ron and Alice came over and engaged us in a conversation--as well as making a special effort to have Tim touch the monument to grasp the nature and dimension of this work of art.
We were deeply impressed. As the former Director of Planning and Historic Preservation for the Borough of Gettysburg, PA, I continued to follow his impressive work in Gettysburg--and wish to extend my deepest sympathies to the family for such a tragic loss. In sorrow, Walt Powell

Ron's sister was one of my best friends through high school. I was at her house nearly every day and Ron was always at work with his sculptures. In retrospect I should have asked him for one of his mini civil war soldiers! He was son talented and was such a special art student at Carey High School. Sadly, time passed and his sister Ann was killed in an auto accident. I was happy to get in touch with Lois to learn how successful her brother had become. To hear of his passing was such a shock. My prayers are with his wife and family. God Bless.

Julie and I will always remember our visit on November 20, 1999 to meet Ron and to tour his studio. He was a very generous man in so many ways. Upon leaving he gave us the shoe of the "fallen Confederate" from the clay study of the State of Delaware monument at Gettysburg NMP as a memento of our visit and later invited us to attend its dedication. We are shocked and sad. He left all of us much too young. Our condolences to Alice, his children and family.

Dear Family,
I knew Ron all through my high school years at Carey. I was his sister, Ann's, best friend. I was always at their house and, of course, got to see much of what Ron accomplished during those Carey years. His Civil War scene done in clay was the most amazing show of talent and was displayed in the hall of Carey for all to see. I had been in contact with Lois at times, especially when they lost Ann. I know this message has taken a long time to be written, but I was recently been showing Ron's sculptures to a friend of mine. He was just amazing. I don't know if you will know I responded, but I would like to leave a message just the same. I wish your family the best and know that Ron was an amazing person for your family and community.
