Obituary of Thomas J. Powers
GREENVILLE β Thomas J. Powers, 72, passed away suddenly at home on Tuesday, August 27, 2013. Born in Yonkers on August 23, 1941, he was son of the late Thomas and Margaret Lane Powers. Tom was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Yonkers. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1966. Tom was employed as a truck driver by McKesson & Robbins Pharmaceuticals, and owned a franchise route for Nabisco. He moved to Greenville with his family in 1987, and has been employed since by NAPA Auto Parts in Greenville. Tom was also one of the owners of the Greenville Drive-In Theater. Tom was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church in Greenville, and was formerly a member of Greenville American Legion Post 291. He was an enthusiastic fan of the New York Yankees and the New York Giants. Tom and Joan wintered recently in Myrtle Beach, SC, where he became a follower of Coastal Carolina University athletics.
Tom is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 45 years, Joan M. Burke Powers; his children, Colleen Powers and Stanley Florek; his brother, William Powers; two grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 State Route 81, Greenville. Funeral Mass will be offered Friday at 1:30 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, 4987 State Route 81, Greenville, followed by burial in Greenville Cemetery.
