Obituary of Florence J. Tobin
FREEHOLD – Florence J. Nelsen Tobin, 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, July 17, 2013 at her son’s residence in South Westerlo. Born in Brooklyn on April 2, 1923, she was daughter of the late Ingvald and Anna Wilson Nelsen. Florence was a graduate of Girls Commercial High School in Brooklyn. She worked for several years as a bookkeeper before marrying and dedicating herself to tending her home and raising her family. The family moved to Freehold in 1962, and Florence worked in several of the boarding houses in the area. She was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church in Greenville, and a member of the Freehold Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. Florence enjoyed ceramics, baking pies, making preserves, crocheting, and creating children’s costumes for Halloween and Christmas, for which she won several awards.
Florence is survived by her husband of 65 years, William R. Tobin; two sons, William R. Tobin and Bert C. (Holly L.) Tobin; four grandchildren, William H. Tobin, Noelle Elizabeth Sagan, Andrew D. Tobin and Cameron Z. Sagan; one sister, Peggy Lindahl; one niece, Carol Halpin; two sisters-in-law, Madeline Senn and Doris Nelsen; several other nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Florence was predeceased by her siblings, Marie Turner, Lillian Nelsen and Andrew Nelsen.
Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville. The funeral will be Saturday at 12 noon at St. John the Baptist Church, 4987 Route 81, Greenville, followed by burial in Greenville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, 4 Pine West Plaza, Suite 405, Albany, NY 12205, or to Community Hospice, 445 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205 will be appreciated.
