After studying biology with "Mr. Makely" at Hackett JHS, I spent three summers ('73 -'75) on the farm making hay. Don was such an inspiration to me, and a very formative part of my growing up. My last letter to him was returned by the PO. I wanted to tell him about how I had finally become a teacher. To all the Makely "kids" who I knew once upon a time, and all the family, you have my deepest condolences. Gosh, those summers on the farm were the best summers of my life! Wish I could have said goodbye . . . .

I wish I had words to express how important Don was in helping me grow up and learn what is most important,. I will always remember his care and concern when I needed guidance, and his sage advice when I needed to hear it. His influence will always be with me.

When I started my science teaching career, Don took me under his wings and he became my "Guru". We continued that mentor/guru relationship for 30 years. Don, rest in peace.

Mostly my memories are of growing up with his children. Donny was my Dad's cousin and we all grew up in the area. I have memories of going to the farm and helping with hay.

I started working at the age of 14 on the Makely farm. But it wasn't just a job, it was so much more. Getting a chance to be a part of the Makely family was very special for me. Because working on the farm and being part of the farm, Mr. Makely made you feel like family. He was an amazing man that I always respected and admired. I have very fond memories of Mr. Makely, Wally and "Gram", Sam and all his brothers and sisters. A large part of who I am today... is because of the formative years I spent "growing up" with Mr. Makely on the family farm. My condolences and sympathies to the entire family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Love to all, Bob Stock

So very sorry to hear of Don's passing. He was a very kind, gentle man, and good neighbor. We will sorely miss seeing him on his tractor, working the fields on the farm that he so loved. Our sincere condolences to the entire family.
