Obituary of Martin Bernard Cullen

**Obituary for Martin “Marty” “Murt” Bernard Cullen**

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Martin “Marty” “Murt” Bernard Cullen, who left us peacefully on Monday, September 9, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family at his son’s home.

Born on August 19, 1946, in Barntown, County Wexford, Ireland, to the late Aidan Cullen and Mary (Murphy) Cullen, Marty was the cherished second youngest of seven siblings. At the tender age of 16, he set out for England with his brother in search of work, before embarking on a journey to New York City with just $20 in his pocket. Marty’s early years in America were marked by hard work as a baggage handler for Carey Bus Lines at JFK Airport, where he met the love of his life, Margaret Anne Cullen. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love and adventure. In 1966, Marty proudly served his country as a Sergeant in an MP unit in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea and Fort Devens, Massachusetts.

After his honorable discharge, he and Peggy and son Patrick moved to Los Angeles, where he briefly worked as a patrolman with the LAPD before returning east to settle in Natick, Massachusetts. It was here that he found his calling in telecommunications, eventually establishing Cullen Communications, a successful venture that served customers throughout New England.

Marty was a man of many passions; he was an avid collector of antique clocks and watches, frequently traveling to antique shows and flea markets as a longtime member of the NAWCC. His love for exploration extended to his family, as he cherished camping and taking cross-country trips, creating a wealth of memories along the way.

Affectionately known as Dayday to his grandchildren; Allie, Aidan, Kieran, Baby Kate.

Known to family and close friends as Marty the one-man party. He would sit for hours in the driveway watching the mountains and the horizon and sip his coffee or tea. You needed only to sit down with him to attend a “party” and listen to his funny stories of the past, reminiscing. Every day was a party. A blessing. He truly felt at peace outside observing nature.

Martin had a talent for putting the past behind him and never holding a grudge.

Marty is predeceased by his beloved wife, Margaret “Peggy” A. Cullen; his daughter, Nora Elizabeth Cullen; his brothers, Paddy and Aidan Cullen; and his longtime partner, Lorna Murphy.

He is survived by his devoted son, Patrick Cullen, and daughter-in-law, Cindy (Swanberg) Cullen; four grandchildren, Allie, Aidan, Kieran, and Katie; as well as his siblings John Cullen of Tipperary, Kathleen Cullen of Wexford, Breda (Cullen) Kenny of Wexford, and Anne (Cullen) Cassidy of Dublin, Ireland. Additionally, he leaves behind numerous loving nieces and nephews who will forever hold him in their hearts.

Marty’s kindness, humor, and zest for life have left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
