Obituary of Maryla Willings
Maryla Kalwinska Willings, 82, passed away at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, New York on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. Born in Lwow, Poland (Lviv, Ukraine today) on November 7, 1941, a daughter of the late Jozef and the late Stanislawa (née Krolik) Kalwinska.
When the Russians occupied Lwow after World War II, a very young Maryla, her even younger sister and family were relocated to Gliwice, in the Silesian Voivodship in western Poland, created from territories annexed from Germany. There she completed her education before eventually emigrating to the United States in the 1970s, where she eventually obtained a college degree in computer science.
On July 17, 1976, she married Oscar Willings in Jamaica, Queens County, New York. Together, they shared almost 3 years of marriage before Oscar passed away. Following his death, she worked at the Steifel Soap factory and later did computer work for a local bank in Hudson.
Maryla was a loving wife, caregiver, and a woman of strong faith. She enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking, feeding birds, tending compassionately to stray animals, and spending long hours on the phone with her friends and family. She was a devout communicant of the Roman Catholic Church and in later years, participated daily in televised Holy Mass and devotions.
Maryla is survived by her sister in Poland, Krystyna Zoltowska-Skoczen, her nephew Bruno and Dorota Zoltowski and their two daughters Barbara and Olga, and by her stepdaughter, Renata Willings Stetina of Winona, Minnesota. She also leaves behind many local friends and neighbors whom she enjoyed and valued deeply and whose help through the years she sincerely appreciated, most especially Barry Gerson and Mark Case. Finally, she leaves behind her pet cat, Blackie, a former stray who is bereft without her and who is actively seeking a new, loving home.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life at A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville, NY On Thursday., Aug. 8Th, there will be a one hour gathering from 11 AM to 12 PM at the funeral home, followed by a Roman Catholic funeral service at noon. Interment of her cremains will follow at the Potter Hollow Rural Cemetery in Potter Hollow, Albany County, New York.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Greenville Area Food Pantry in Maryla’s memory would be appreciated.
