Obituary of Aaron Everett Matthews
On January 8, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer, Aaron entered the gates of heaven on the wings of an eagle, surrounded by his close family and friends. Aaron was born and raised in Freehold, New York. He graduated from GCS in 1987, and received his AAS in landscape design and turf management from SUNY Delhi in 1990. Aaron was a heavy equipment operator for his entire life, learning at an early age working with his father in their family excavation business, Mattland Excavation. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union for many years. Aaron also owned and operated his own business for many years. One of the highlights of Aaron’s career was teaching Heavy Equipment operating for Questars high school program. He truly loved his students and enjoyed teaching tremendously. Aaron was an active member of Greenville Fire Department and most recently Freehold Fire Department. He loved riding his Harley and was an avid hunter. Aaron’s favorite place to be was at the family’s hunting cabin in Cornwallville, surrounded by his family and friends.He will always be remembered for his huge smile, his love of life and the never ending ability to bust chops! Aaron is predeceased by his father Craig Matthews and grandfather Everett (Pick) Matthews.
He is survived by his mother Linda Matthews. His daughters Keely (Brian) Tumey, Lauren, Kaitlyn, and Hailey Matthews. His sisters, Heather (Brian) Champlin and Fawn (Richard) Landry. Grandsons Conor and Matthew Tumey and granddaughter Maylee Miller. He was adored by his 5 nephews and 4 nieces. He also leaves behind his son by heart Shane Hilland and his faithful companion, The World Famous Buck Beagle.
Aaron has been privately cremated. Memorial calling hours will be held on Friday January 13th from 3 to 6pm at the A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 State Route 81, Greenville, followed by a fire company service at 6pm.
