Old Friend posted a condolence

I knew Chip(Austin) for almost 20 years. He was a very special human being…we used to joke that ‘they’ broke the mold when they made Chip!! All those who knew him well, would agree he was a ‘force to be reckoned with’. He was the most intense person I knew, and whatever it was that he loved and/or had a passion for he excelled at. He was fiercely loyal to his close friends, they knew if they needed him in anyway, he had their back.
Chip’s sense of humor was like no other. He had such a quick wit, he was the funniest person I knew. He loved to play jokes on people….He used to wear his ‘Sammy Hagar’ wig out in public places and loved seeing the reaction of everyone who saw him. One person actually asked him if they could touch his hair! He also had an awesome vocabulary, was very articulate…something that he took a lot of pride in.
Chip was very proud of his work as a NYS Corrections officer. He took his job very seriously. The most challenging and rewarding part of his career was when he worked on death row. He spoke of the heinous crimes of the inmates he spent time with every day. You have to be a very tough, courageous and authoritative individual to work in that environment...that was Chip! He spoke of the lifelong bond he had with his fellow officers. They not only had each other’s back, they also made the best of a very difficult job and used to laugh and joke to help get through the day. Chip taking the lead of course! He still kept in touch and was very good friends with many of them until the end.
Chip was an avid hunter his whole life. He loved deer season and would go to his favorite stand every day if he could. He not only loved the challenge but he loved the solace of being in the woods. This was something his dad ‘Buck’ introduced to him and that they did together. When he did get a deer, he would often donate the venison to people that needed it in his community.
Yes, he loved guns. He and his dad were members of the local gun club. He used to be outstanding at skeet shooting, and happily assisted others on improving their skeet shooting skills.
Chip also loved to cook! He was always trying to master his ‘culinary skills’. He often watched the food network to get new ideas. During his illness he could barely eat, but still cooked for others because he enjoyed it so much, and he also needed the smell of homemade cooking in his home.
After Chip got sick…he took up paddle boarding. It was something his illness allowed him to do. He of course only bought the top of the line paddle boards, and one wasn’t good enough for Chip, he had to have 2! He learned to paddle board up in Maine, and went locally to Saratoga Lake.
Chip loved his seafood….Raw oysters, shrimp cocktail and Maine lobster were among his favorites. He frequented York Beach, Maine many times over the years and would always visit his favorite restaurants to get his seafood fix. He also enjoyed the peace and tranquility of being near the ocean.
There is so much more I can say about Chip including how much he loved to dance…and listen to music!
But, I think it’s important to state how he handled his battle with stomach cancer. He could have the worst ‘episodes’ and 10 minutes later he would be cracking joke, laughing and singing. Something I know I could not do. He did not know how much time he had left, but lived life his way and to the fullest to the very end.
I will never forget you Chip Dickens. RIP my special friend….until we meet again.

The loss of someone so dear is never something easy to go through. When someone passes, it is only the cherished memory of them that can bring us a sense of lightness during a dark time. During this time of darkest, cherish all of the amazing memories you had. These memories will bring you a sense of peace. He was so happy to find you and kept telling us he was so lucky that you came into his life.
For you that didn't know him Austin was such a great person and really helped Kim not only in her studies (he would have been so proud this week when she was pinned from her nursing program), making her special meals, packing her lunch for work every day and he helped her lose 100 pounds. He will be sadly missed at our family events especially with his dry sense of humor.
Kimberly, may all of the sweetest, fondest memories bring you a sense of peace and solace during this time. I hope that the amazing memories and cherished moments you had together will help to bring you a sense of comfort.
We are here for whatever you need,
