We moved to South Street in the late 60s and became one of the families that grew together as the "kids" all played at each other's houses and in the yards and fields of Greenville. Behind all the kids was a "Mom" orchestrating the swimming events, fixing meals for the gang swooping through the houses, and razing havoc as each kid asked if they could stay for dinner. All the moms seemed to have an unseen communication chain that allowed for that "yes" nod or "sorry not tonight" message to be transmitted. Each mom (and family) had their turn at feeding and caring for the swarm, patching that scrapped knee, mediating the fight, and helping with school events. As the years passed, and the kids and families headed off to new lives, two families remained in Greenville and the moms remained fast friends. Hilde and my mom (Harriet) shared so much over the years. I remember so fondly the early years and reach back often in my mind to have a happy memory. With all that comes the more recent memories of the aging years and how close, caring, kind, soft, hardworking, loving, funny, supportive, and blessed, Hilde's friendship was to my mom. This never-ending friendship and support brought such joy to our lives. Never sad, but always with a laugh and a happy tear of joy as a memory was recalled. Hilde's life and her place in our lives is forever marked with love and extreme gratitude. While she put so much into caring for her friend Harriet, she continued outpouring care for so many others as well. As the last South Street Mom of "our" gang, I remember her this day.....and say Thank You...you were, and are loved forever.

Hilde's family: I am so sorry about your Mom. I first met her many many years ago when she came to visit my next door neighbor (Helen Gunst) with her Mother. She was a lovely woman. You were all so lucky to have her in your life. May her memory be a blessing to you all.

My sister, Susan, and I worked with Hilde as waitresses at Schmollingers in the very early 1970's. I have fond memories of Hilde as a kind and helpful co-worker and friend. She was an absolute joy to work with - the "down-to-earth" kind of person who made you feel as though you had known her all your life. Hilde often spoke lovingly and proudly of her husband and her children. I remember one story in particular when she and her husband set out Easter baskets filled with goodies in the woods behind their house the night before Easter. When they accompanied their children to the woods on Easter morning to see what the Easter bunny had left, all that remained of the baskets and contents were little bits of colored wrappers - some of God's creatures apparently had themselves quite a feast. Rest in peace, Hilde. My condolences, Linda Harmsen

I remember Hilde very well from working at Pleasant View. She introduced me to my ex wife. She was a kind and compassionate woman who when you could make her laugh, was a great person to be around. Nothing but good memories. My prayers go out to her family.
