Obituary of Alice E. Brand
Alice E. Brand, 86, of Conesville, passed away on Friday, October 1, 2021 at Samaritan Hospital, Troy. She was born on October 2, 1934 to Emmett R. Leber Sr. and Ruth (Fitzgerald) Leber in Brooklyn. She passed one day short of her 87th birthday. She graduated from Middleburgh Central School in 1952. Alice was married to Alton G. Brand on April 4, 1954, was a lifelong resident of Conesville, and jointly owned Brand’s Paving Inc. with her beloved husband.
Alice’s faith led her way throughout her life. She was a dedicated member of the Conesville Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, Bible Study Leader and organizer of Church events. She was also a member of the Eastern Star.
Alice’s life focused around her family; she loved having get togethers for all holidays. Christmas Eve was a special event for her family and friends when she served her famous liver and onions. She was also known for her love of animals and could often be found playing cards with her basset hound, Fred (Fred always won). She always loved a good game of Skip Bo with her family and delighted in quietly cheating. Basketball, English murder mysteries, jigsaw puzzles and reading were fond hobbies.
Those left to treasure her memories are her daughter, Connie Jo VanValkenburgh (Jack) of Gilboa; sons, Thomas Brand (Debra) of Gilboa, Timothy Brand (Darcy) of Prattsville, and Stephen Oliver (Gina) of Colorado Springs, CO; 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law Claire Leber, and many nieces and nephews. Alice was predeceased by her husband Alton, son Gary Brand, and grand-daughter in-law Valerie VanValkenburgh.
