Obituary of Martha Elliott

CORNWALLVILLE – Martha Elliott, 88 years young, passed away on Friday, February 26, 2021 while hospitalized in Wilmington, NC. Martha was born in Jersey City, NJ on February 10, 1933, daughter of the late Joseph and Martha DeMonte Platt. She lived in Jersey City for 43 years, moved to Cornwallville for another 43 years, and the last year-and-a-half at Lake Shore Retirement Community in Wilmington. Martha was extremely happy and social. She loved her family and friends, and her house. She was always very active, liked to travel and go on senior trips, and be the life of the party. Martha was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Mountain Top Golden Ages, WAJPL Golden Ages, Cairo Golden Ages, Greenville Golden Years, Rensselaerville Senior Club, Catskill Seniors, Acra Senior Club, and Athens Senior Club. She always made people laugh and smile. She enjoyed traveling on cruises, playing cards, shopping, lunching, sewing, and knitting. She loved animals and nature, and attending church. Martha never complained and was always ready to go, and to help a friend, until she developed heart and respiratory issues, and moved to North Carolina with her daughter, to enjoy nice weather all year long, and to engage in age-appropriate games, activities, and outings, sun up till sun down. Martha is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Misiewicz, and many friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William Elliott; daughters, Sharon Misiewic-DeLeo and Kathleen Misiewic-Gilson; and brother, Joseph Platt. Memorial calling hours will be conducted on Tuesday, May 11th from 2 until 5 p.m. at A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 State Route 81, Greenville. Masks and social distancing are required, and 60 visitors at a time are allowed. Memorial Mass will be offered on Wednesday, May 12th at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Knock Shrine, 2052 State Route 145, East Durham. Masks and social distancing are required. Burial of her ashes will follow in Cornwallville Cemetery, followed by a reception at 12:30 p.m. at the Shamrock House, 2388 State Route 145, East Durham.
