Obituary of Esther Tompkins
MANORKILL - Esther Richtmyer Tompkins, age 96, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 22, 2012, surrounded by her granddaughters. Born on Feb. 14, 1916 to Frank and Ada Spaulding Richtmyer, Esther was the youngest of seven children, and a lifelong resident of Manorkill. Mrs. Tompkins was preceded in death by her husband, Edward L. Tompkins, and their only son, Donald Allan Tompkins. Esther was the Valedictorian of the Gilboa-Conesville High School Class of 1933. She had been employed by McDermott Bros. Creamery in Manorkill and Hinkley's Auto as a bookkeeper. She gathered weather data for the City of New York for many years, and served as the Conesville Town Clerk. Esther was active in the Manorkill Methodist Church. She and her husband managed a dairy farm for several years. Esther enjoyed books, movies, music, crocheting, driving, shopping, visitors, and the companionship of her cat, Pete.
Esther is survived by three granddaughters, Karen High, Kathy Oakley and Kimberly Weidner; her great-grandson, Dylan Weidner; and a great-niece, Linda Brown.
