Obituary of Evelyn Van Voorhis

Evelyn (Sanford) Van Voorhis Evelyn Van Voorhis (85) of Preston Hollow, NY passed away at the Arden Hill Hospital in Goshen, NY on Nov. 28, 2009. She was born in Preston Hollow, NY on March 14, 1924 daughter of the late James & Eleanor Mae (Mercer) Sanford. She was a 60 yr. member of the Potter Hollow Grange #1555; serving as Master, Lady Assistant Steward, Flora, Flag Bearer, Gate Keeper and Lecturer. After the Potter Hollow Grange closed, she became a member of the Hiawatha Grange. She was a member of the Albany County Pomona Grange and the State Grange of New York. Evelyn was also a 70 year member of the Preston Hollow Baptist Church and served as a Deaconess, Member of the Board of Trustees, Head of the Board of Education and Sunday School Teacher. She also sang in the church choir for many years. Evelyn worked at General Electric, Montgomery Ward, served as a Town Assessor, and was a Home Health Aid. However her greatest joy was serving as a homemaker to her husband and three childen. She believed in the adage "Let Me Live in the House by the side of the road and Be a Friend to Man". Her door was always open and a cup of tea to all. Surviving are two children; Sharon Lynn Chichester (Bruce) of Harriman, NY, Carl Peter Van Voorhis (Carla) of Tannersville, PA, eight grndchildren; James Van Voorhis, Jr. (Sherry), Jeffrey Van Voorhis (Susan), Matthew Van Voorhis (Donald), Michael Chichester (Rosemary), Brian Chichester (Andrea), Shawn Chichester (Brooke), Danielle Rothe (John), Jason Van Voorhis (Megan); four great grandchildren, Timothy Van Voorhis (Jenn), Amy Van Voorhis, Kaci Van Voorhis & Natalie C. Chichester also a great-great grandson William J. Van Voorhis, a sister Esther Snyder (Don) & a brother Carl Sanford (Marie). Her husband Robert Van Voorhis (2001) and a son James Van Voorhis, Sr. (2007) predeceased her. Funeral service will be Fri. Dec. 4, 11AM at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR81, Greenville, NY. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thurs. 4 to 8PM. Interment will be in the Brookside Cemetery.
