Obituary of Anita L. Ness
Obituary Notice for Anita L. Ness
Anita L. Ness, 91, a longtime resident of Staatsburg, NY, joined the saints in glory on Tuesday, February 20, 2024. She passed from this life at home with her loving healthcare aide, Candace Kharbedia, at her bedside. “Ne,” as she was fondly called, was a loving wife and mother. She was born to Albert and Elise Kurzenhauser on September 29, 1932, in New York City, and grew up in the Bronx with her brother, Alfred, who predeceased her.
Anita was an RN and graduated from the Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital School of Nursing in New York City. She was also a graduate of Empire State College. After passing her state boards, she joined her husband, Bill, at the Naval Base in Oxnard, CA, and worked at the base hospital. After Bill’s discharge, they moved to the Hudson Valley of New York, where Anita worked as an RN in several area hospitals, and then became a school nurse teacher, eventually retiring from the Spackenkill School District.
Anita was a very talented and creative person, who expressed herself eloquently in her painting, sewing, quilting and other handmade gifts: she had her own label called “Threadgifts,” under which she made dresses for her daughters and Christmas stockings for many lucky children in her circle of friends. Those stockings are hung lovingly each season on many fireplace mantels across the country.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, and tending to her flower garden, into which she poured her soul. Listening to her play Christmas carols and favorites from the 1940s on the piano was the greatest pleasure, as she was a talented musician.
Anita is survived by her devoted husband of 71 years, William “Bill” Ness, her daughter Laura Ness and husband Greg Richtarek, of Los Gatos, CA, her daughter Carol Rodenberg and her husband, Kevin, of Hampton, NH, her granddaughter, Natalie Rodenberg and husband Jon Waintroob, a great grandson, Fritz, and a great granddaughter, Annelise, all of Greenland, NH.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 24,2024 at The Winston Cemetery in East Durham, NY. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Hudson Valley Hospice Foundation at 80 Washington St, Suite 204, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
