Obituary of Doris V. Vetter

GREENVILLE - Doris V. Vetter, 93, passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning, June 7, 2016 at Albany Medical Center. She was born March 8, 1923 in South Ozone Park, New York, daughter of the late George and Rose (Hoffmann) Anderson and was pre-deceased by her husband of 47 years, John F. Vetter, husband Alexander Gallagher; two sons Richard J. Vetter and John F. Vetter, Jr., and her sister Mildred Hansen. Doris was a bookkeeper in New York and on Long Island until she retired to Greenville in 1975. She enjoyed knitting/crocheting, bingo, reading, beating her family at cards, crossword puzzles and watching Mets games. She enjoyed post-game phone calls with family to discuss the game and loved to receive calls and cards from those she loved. Doris's love of family extended to the members of the United Methodist Church of Greenville and Norton Hill (UMCGNH). Doris and John joined the Church in 1976 and served it faithfully all of their days. She was in her 38th year of service as the Church's financial secretary, was Treasurer of the United Methodist Women, a Turkey Supper volunteer and shopkeeper of the Church Thrift Shop. Her crumb cakes are well known at the annual bake sales! Doris is survived by her sister Ruth Zapf; her children and their spouses: Thomas & Mary Lou Gallagher, Nancy & Colin Tumey, Laraine Vetter, Robert & Donna Vetter and James Gallagher; grandchildren: Lyndsey Gallagher, Dana & Michael Schmid, Jennifer Tumey, Brian Tumey & Keely Aspenleiter, Michael & Julieen Vetter, Viktoria Vetter, Jeffrey & Shanna Vetter and John Vetter & Tricia McGuigan; nieces and nephews: Lois Cook, Gail Zapf, Barbara Stenson, William Zapf, Robert Kleemann, Robert Cook and Brian Cook; great-grandchildren: Jacob, Olivia, Shayla, Shelby, Cody, Macie, Jeffrey & Samuel. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Greenville and Norton Hill, 5830 State Route 81, Greenville. The funeral will be Friday at 12 noon at the church, followed by interment in the Greenville Cemetery.
