Arlene Marshall

Obituary of Arlene Marshall

WEST COXSACKIE - Arlene Marshall, 83, passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, in The Pines at Catskill.

Arlene was born in Manhattan on April 24, 1940, daughter of the late Charles and Mary Bauer Fitzsimmons.  She was raised in Germantown, Manhattan, and moved to Greenville in 1974, and lived there until 2008 when she moved to Bethany Village. She graduated from Richard Kelly Junior High School, and Julia Richman High School, class of 1957, with a commercial course of study.  Arlene was employed as a secretary at Union Carbide Inter-America, Inc. in Manhattan for 10 years.  She was a stay-at-home mom for several years, and after moving to Greene County, she worked as a secretary at Van Auken Express in Greenville for several years.

In her younger years, Arlene enjoyed stenciling, flower arrangements, and gardening.  The best years of her life were being a mom and then becoming Nana (aka “Tough Nana”).

In the words of Arlene’s daughter, Alison, “My mom was soft and hard.  She taught me compassion and honesty.  She was feisty, loving along the highs and lows of my teenage years.  Mom had a love for cooking and eating good food.  The brightest chapter of her life was becoming a mom and then a nana.  She always had words of wisdom and would let you know when you were wrong, but she was also my first “go-to” when I needed an honest answer.  She would give advice without gossiping or judgement.  She will be greatly missed.”

Arlene is survived by her daughter, Alison Marshall Curless; son, Richard (Roulisa) Marshall; three grandsons, Luke J. Curless, Logen Curless, and Lance Curless.  In addition to her parents, Arlene was predeceased by her ex-husband, Richard Marshall Sr.

Arlene has been cremated privately.  A graveside service will be conducted at a time to be determined.  Condolence page is available at ajcunninghamfh.com.
