Greenville resident, Mary P. Whitney, age 85, passed away peacefully at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx on June 10, 2026.

She is survived by her younger sister Rose, her devoted godchild, Anne Carney,  and many cousins both here and in Ireland. 

She was born in Longford, Ireland to Rose(Collum)  and Peter Whitney on January 8, 1941.

The family emigrated to America in 1949 when Mary was only 8 years old.  Even at that young age, she immediately began to explore her new world and help guide her parents and her younger sister through it.

The family first lived in East Elmhurst Queens with relatives, but soon after relocated to Manhattan, Woodside Queens, and finally to Queens Village NY.

From day one, Mary always loved school and focused on becoming a teacher.  Towards that end, she attended Hunter College and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education (the first in the family to do so) in 1964.  Subsequently, she also earned a Master’s Degree in Education.

She first taught for a few years in St. Joachim and Anne in Queens Village and then taught in Ludlum Elementary School in Hempstead, Long Island.  Her career here flourished until her retirement in 1996. In 1997, she decided to relocate to Greenville NY with her mother.  She took loving care of her mother until her mother’s death in 2015.   She made many new friends in Greenville and continued her passion for photography and travel.

Mary traveled extensively throughout the US and Europe and put together numerous photo albums recounting these trips. When home she loved to attend the local Summer Stock Theatre in Chatham NY and the Saratoga Casino.  She volunteered at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany and at the Greenville Schools. Mary had a warm and loving heart and always gave freely to all.

We have lost a cherished member of the family and the Greenville Community.

There will be a Graveside Service for Mary on Tuesday, September 22 at noon at the Greenville Cemetery.
