GREENVILLE – John I. “Jack” VerPlanck Jr., 88, passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 in the Pines at Catskill after a brief illness.

            Born in Catskill on April 1, 1938, he was a son of the late John I. and Viola Teeple VerPlanck.  Jack was a graduate of Greenville Central School, class of 1956, and was a lifelong Greenville resident.  He worked for more than 25 years at the family farm store in Norton Hill, which was founded by Jack’s grandfather, and which grew in later years to include furniture and appliances.  Jack then worked for 17 years as a salesman at R.C. Lacy Ford-Lincoln-Subaru in Catskill, retiring in 2000.  He then served as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels of Greene County.

            Jack was a member, since 1951, of Asbury United Methodist Church at Norton Hill, and sang in the church choir.  He was a former member and vice-president of the Greenville Volunteer Fire Company, former member, past president, and former District Governor’s Aide of the Greenville Rotary Club, member of the Catskill Glee Club for more than 50 years, member of the Yankee Male Chorus for 15 years, and a longtime collector of stamps and coins.

            Jack is survived by his wife, Maureen C. Ihrie VerPlanck; two sons, John I. VerPlanck III and David VerPlanck; two grandsons, Chase and Cameron VerPlanck; brother-in-law, Richard Parsons; two nephews, Stephen and Andrew Parsons; two great-nephews and one great-niece.

            Jack has been cremated privately.  Calling hours will be Sunday, July 26th from 2 to 4 p.m. at A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 State Route 81, Greenville.  A memorial service will be Monday, July 27th at 11 a.m. in the Asbury United Methodist Church at Norton Hill, 5830 State Route 81, Greenville, followed by burial of his ashes in Greenville Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Greenville Rotary Club, P.O.
