Lillian Sophie Johannesen, 98, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, family, and cherished traditions.

Born on August 8, 1927, in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York, Lillian was the daughter of Frank and Ragna Soderstedt. She spent her early years in Brooklyn before later making her home in Greenville, New York. A graduate of Fort Hamilton High School, she worked as a secretary for Isbrandtsen Shipping in New York City before embracing her most treasured role as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and homemaker.

Lillian was married to the love of her life, Thomas Johannesen, for 56 years. Together they built a life centered on love, family, and tradition. Thomas predeceased her, along with her beloved granddaughter, Lisa Kendrick MacLeod; grandson, Carson John Love; and son-in-law, Terrence Kendrick.

She is survived by her son, Thomas Johannesen; her daughter, Janice Kendrick; her grandchildren, Todd Kendrick (Jeanne), Greg Kendrick (Lisa), and Jaime Love (Dominick); and her cherished great-grandchildren, Emily, Mason, Cadence, Cole, Claire, Jacob, and Cassidy.

Family was the center of Lillian’s world. She found her greatest joy in bringing loved ones together and celebrating life’s special moments. Family picnics were among her favorite gatherings, where she became famous for her delicious baked beans. Christmas was especially dear to her heart, and she loved gathering the children around the tree to share treasured Norwegian traditions that connected generations of her family.

Whether gathered around the holiday table, enjoying a summer picnic, or setting off on a new adventure, Lillian cherished every opportunity to be surrounded by those she loved. Throughout her life, she traveled extensively with her extended family across the United States and Europe, creating memories and traditions that will be remembered for generations. Maine and Florida were among her favorite destinations, but it was the company of family that made every journey special. Proud of her Norwegian heritage, Lillian was an active member of the Sons of Norway and the Order of the Eastern Star, organizations through which she celebrated her heritage, friendships, and community.

Known for her remarkable independence, Lillian continued driving herself to her weekly hair appointments until just a year ago. She also treasured her Sunday lunches with her sisters-in-law, affectionately known by the family as “The Golden Girls.” Their friendship, laughter, and companionship brought her great joy throughout the years.

Lillian will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, strength, and unwavering devotion to her family. She taught those around her the importance of family, tradition, and staying connected to one’s roots. Her love touched every life she encountered, and the memories she created will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

She will be forever loved, deeply missed, and remembered always.
