Donald A. Smith Obituary

WESTERLO - Donald Allan Smith (age 77), who was lovingly known by many as Don, Donnie, Don-Don, Pa, & Pops peacefully passed away surrounded by the love of his family on Sunday, April 12th, 2026. Don was born on November 29th, 1948 in Catskill, he was the son of the late Clayton L. and Dolores (Williams) Smith.

Donnie spent his childhood years in Greene County and graduated from Cairo High School in 1968. Although they attended different high schools, Don shared 57 years of marriage with his high school sweetheart Linda (Berk). Post graduation, Don had a lifelong career with family and friends at GE Selkirk and was blessed to have retired early at the age of 56. He dedicated the last 30 years to his community as president of the Hannacroix Rural Cemetery and was also a member of Asbury UM Church.

Donnie was an avid freshwater and ocean fisherman. His winters were often enjoyed with friends in Florida, while summers were spent with his Adirondack Camping Club companions. A lifetime of family memories were made at the Jersey shore, the Outer Banks, and at the family’s camp.  Even though Don usually lost, he could never pass up a trip to the casino, and especially loved Atlantic City. He was a master craftsman and loved tinkering, he could fix anything that broke, he was a true Macgyver. Don had a great sense of humor, and expressed his playful affection by assigning everyone a nickname. He was a great storyteller, loved history, western movies, and learning about his genealogy.

Don’s strength and resilience was unwavering, he battled long and hard for his health. He never complained and always remained upbeat, often saying "I'm good” while flashing two thumbs up.  He was loved and cherished by everyone he met, including his medical providers.

Donald is survived by his loving wife Linda, his son Donald Jr. (Shannon), daughter Rhonda Armour (Nicholas), grandchildren Donald (D.J) III Smith  (Lindsey), Emma Smith  (Hunter), and  Paul, and Troy Armour. He is predeceased by his parents, and his brothers Marvin and Clayton Smith.

Calling hours will be held at A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home in Greenville on Sunday, April 19th from 11am to -2pm, followed by the funeral service at 2. Donald will be laid to final rest on Monday April 20th at the Hannacroix Rural Cemetery at 11am.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Asbury United Methodist Church, P.O.
