Anne was a mentor, friend and gadfly whose leadership in early learning and social justice for low-income families made a huge difference. She took me under her wing in my first days as a program officer at Carnegie Corporation of New York in 1990 and quickly became an indispensable adviser and — eventually- ongoing grantee. Her pioneering work on financing and quality consumer oriented systems in states and cities across the US was essential best in class work that has improved education and care for literally millions. I had lost touch with her over the last decade and am so deeply saddened Phil and family to hear of her passing. Anne was a very special friend and ally— her imprint on the early childhood field is indelible! May her memory be for a blessing. Michael Levine

Anne was fun-loving and a great asset to the Greenville Quilters group. She was always ready to help others and shared with me that her favorite book of the Bible was the book of Psalms. I will miss her. My sympathy to Phil, Amelia, Henry and all her extended family and friends. God bless you all.

I was lucky to have worked briefly with Anne on a cost study on early education and care (EEC) years before this concept was widespread. She provided me a vision of how to follow my passion and create a career of working on policy and finance issues in EEC back when very few people were doing this. She was truly a trailblazer that changed the EEC landscape and provided inspiration for the generations that followed.

Anne was a special colleague and friend who was brilliant, strategic, warm, fun loving, creative and a million other adjectives. When we had differences, she was civil and at the next opportunity would warm again. We learned to get along when we disagreed and teamed up mightily when we did agree. Early childhood folks are deeply indebted to her as Ellen W. noted, whether they know it or not. I was her colleague as a TA at NCCIC for years, and worked with her when she led NAEYC. She helped shape a better world, where the children we love, all children, are given the opportunities they deserve, to thrive. Godspeed Anne!

I am heartbroken to learn that Anne Michell passed away. I will always remember her as a woman of firm conviction and tireless energy. The child care system consultation she provided in New Hampshire still bears fruit for the children, families and child care providers who live there. They may not know her name but I won't forget Anne Mitchell and what she gave us.

Such a loss. Those of us in Anne’s generation were “fed by her” to further the cause…learning how to use data toward higher quality in the ECCE field and how to “keep going” for try change. She fueled me continuously in her writing, teaching and action. My condolences to all who knew and loved her.

I will never forget how when Anne was President of NAEYC, she engaged an audience of thousands of participants in the keynote at the annual NAEYC conference in an interactive, small group activity. She truly embodied Bank Street's philosophy of theory and practice in her professional work. In addition to knowing and respecting Anne, professionally, I was lucky enough to enjoy her company for many years as part of a group that got together annually for many years for 3 days and nights on a lake. She was always the first to jump into the cold water and swim across the bay. She would lead canoe adventures, loved to kayak, and would bring her lovely home grown vegetables for salads. I will miss her thoughtful opinions, her incredible intellect, her creativity, and her generosity.

Anne’s impact on me and the Scott M. Ellis Elementary School was profound. The strength and excellent reputation of the elementary school at Greenville is due in many ways to Anne and her expertise and wisdom which she so willingly and graciously offered. Students who have attended Scott M. Ellis are stronger and better because of Anne. Thank you, Anne, from the bottom of my heart.
