FREEHOLD – James Brendan Mooney, 76, also known as “Jim” and “Pop-Pop”, passed away on Sunday, July 27, 2025.
Jim was born in Brooklyn on June 17, 1949, a son of the late Edwin Walter Mooney and Dorothy Kay Mooney. He was raised in Tottenville, Staten Island and lived most of his life in Mystic, Connecticut. Upon retiring, he lived in Gold Canyon, Arizona and Freehold, New York. Jim graduated from Tottenville High School, SUNY Delhi with an Associate of Applied Science, and the University of New Haven with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. He was a Storekeeper in the U.S. Coast Guard for 4 years, then worked as a Purchasing Agent for 29.75 years at Electric Boat, a division of General Dynamics in Groton.
Jim was friendly and outgoing, and brought joy to all those around him. He was a history buff, and enjoyed reading, gardening, golfing, playing cards, and traveling. He and his wife Jan traveled to over 35 countries and throughout the United States. Jim was a member of Greenville American Legion Post 291.
Jim is survived by his wife, Janis R. Mooney (Sharkey); children, Jill Mooney Snyder and husband Scott Peter Snyder, Brian James Mooney and wife Kimberley Dee Mooney; grandchildren, Braedyn Mooney (20), Ellis Snyder (20), Evan Snyder (17), Ava Mooney (16), Steven Snyder (13), and Vivian Mooney (12); twin brother, Kevin J. (Fran) Mooney; brother, Vincent (Sue) Mooney; sister-in-law, Barb Mooney; his “brother from another mother”, Chick (Susan) DeStefano; his brother and sister-in-law, Denis (Carol) Mayer; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his brothers, E. Ronald Mooney and Dennis J. Mooney. Jim was looking forward to reuniting with his family in heaven.
A Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday, August 2nd at 11 a.m. in the Asbury United Methodist Church, 5830 State Route 81, Greenville, followed by a reception in the Carney Center, behind the church. All are welcome to attend.
