It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William "Bill" Bensen, a truly remarkable man who touched the lives of so many. Bill passed away, surrounded by the love of his family and friends, on Monday, July 14th, 2025, at the age of 74.
Bill lived a life rich in experience and filled with warmth. After spending his formative years in Staten Island and Brooklyn, he embraced a new chapter in upstate New York in 1986. There, alongside his beloved late wife, Susan, and her family, he poured his heart and soul into creating The Palmer House Café. This wasn't just a restaurant; it was a cherished community hub in the hamlet of Rensselaerville, and Bill, as its chef, was its beating heart.
More than just a talented chef, Bill will be lovingly remembered for his profound generosity, his passion for learning and teaching, and his deep love of both his family and the community he held so dearly.
He leaves behind his partner, Diane, his three siblings, Cecelia, John. and Ted, and the family he embraced as his own: Diane’s daughter, Marisa, her husband, Eric, and his adored granddaughter, Ramona
Bill's legacy will continue to live on in the countless lives he touched.
Please join us in celebrating his extraordinary life at Hilltown Commons on Saturday, July 19th at 5:00 PM. In the spirit of Bill's generous heart, the celebration will feature favorites from The Palmer House menu, prepared by the chefs he mentored and inspired over the years.
Let us come together to share food, stories, and love in memory of a truly exceptional man.
