Obituary of Stephen Warren Wood

Stephen Wood Passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday June 4th.

Survived by his 2 Sons Gordon and Tim Wood, his Daughter Tina Wood and partner Kevin Mckearn, Grand Children Stephen Wood & Husband Tim, Diamond Wood & Partner Tyler Roach, Avary Wood, Crystal & Finessa Hardy and his 6 beautiful Great Grandchildren.

Stephen Wood was happily married to Barbara for 58 years until her passing in June of 2023. Stephen and Barbara were the proprietors of the Knotty Pine bar and grill, before Stephen became a part of the Local Union Operating Engineers.

After retiring from the Union he established his own company, S.W. Construction.

After retiring he and Barbara spent their time travelling and wintering in Florida.

Stephen served in the military as a part of the Big Red One, 2nd Battalion, 2nd infantry. He was one of the few surviving the battle of Ap Nha Mat, on 5 December, the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry, defeated the Viet Cong in the Michelin Rubber Plantation, northwest of the Division’s Lai Khe base camp. By the end of 1965 the Division had participated in three major operations: Hump, Bushmaster I and Bushmaster II. Stephen was awarded 2 purple hearts and the Vietnam Service Medal during his time in Vietnam.

Calling hours will be Monday, June 9 2025, from 11am and 1PM, at A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home,4898 SR 81 Greenville, followed by burial in Potter Hollow Cemetery. The Oak Hill Durham Firemen will conduct a service as well as the American Legion during calling hours.
