Derek A. Butterworth, of East Durham, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, March 28, 2025, at the age of 36, following a brief battle with congestive heart failure. He was born on Saturday, July 30, 1988, in Hudson, New York, the son of the late Andrew and Tamara (née Van Dyke) Butterworth.
Derek was a passionate lover of the outdoors, with a deep appreciation for nature and all its beauty. His love for landscaping, hiking, hunting, and fishing reflected his connection to the natural world. Above all, Derek treasured the time spent with his family and friends, and he will be remembered for the joy, warmth, and laughter he brought to their lives. His absence will be felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Derek’s family kindly asks that he be remembered not for the sorrow of his passing but for the happiness and love he shared with others during his life.
Derek is survived by his two children, Derek Jr., 11, and Owen, 9, who were the lights of his life. He also leaves behind his two sisters, Tami Ann Lacy and Gloria Johnson, as well as his brother, Jason Johnson. Derek’s legacy continues with his cherished nieces and nephews: Lucia Rouse Dylan and Justyn Lacy, Gabriella Miller, Sergio caridi and Ryan and Jayda Johnson, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.
A private cremation has taken place. A memorial gathering to celebrate Derek’s life will be held on Thursday, April 10th, from 3 to 5 pm at Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville, New York.
In honor of Derek’s memory, his family encourages those who attend to share stories and reflect on the ways he touched their lives with kindness and joy.
