Obituary of Herbert E. Schmidt

DURHAM – Herbert E. Schmidt, 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday April 8, 2017 at Greene Meadows Nursing and Rehab Center. He was born on April 7, 1934 in San Francisco to the late Robert E. and Alma Olson Schmidt. He lived in California until he joined the Air Force in 1952. During his twelve years in the military, he traveled to many different places. After meeting Judith Gorman, he was Honorably Discharged from the military and they married in June 1964. Together they lived in Brooklyn, before moving and residing in Durham for the past 30 years. Herbert loved his family, loved the mountains, and loved playing golf. He played the banjo in the local band, Good Time Jazz Band. He was the owner of Alpha Sign Supplies, which he ran first in Brooklyn, then in Durham. Herbert is survived by his beloved wife, Judith; his children, Dr. Matthew Schmidt of Ridge, NY and Dr. David (Jane) Schmidt of Goshen, NY; and his grandchildren, Emma, Eric, and Emily Schmidt. Herbert was privately cremated and a memorial Mass will be held at a later date. Condolences can be posted at ajcunninghamfh.com.
