Obituary of Alvin H. Latham

WESTERLO – Alvin H. Latham, 83, passed away suddenly on Sunday October 9, 2016. He was born on October 28, 1932 in Albany to the late Henry H. and Zaida DeLavergne Latham. He was a lifelong resident of Westerlo. After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force, where he had been a flight crew chief, Alvin worked as a logger in the western States, returning home to the tradesman industry and served the balance of his career as a Highway Foreman for the Albany County DPW until his retirement. Alvin also worked as the elected Town Assessor in Westerlo for many years and served as an Albany County Committeeman for the Democratic Nominating Committee. He was a member of several organizations, including the Westerlo Rescue Squad, of which he was a Past Captain, the Westerlo Reformed Church where he served as an Elder, the American Legion Post in Voorheesville, the Helderberg Hilltoppers, and the Westerlo Historical Society. He was a life member of both, the Westerlo Volunteer Fire Company and Westerlo-Basic Valley Fish & Game Club holding several leadership positions to promote the growth of these organizations. Alvin was a patriot and life member of the NRA. He enjoyed serving the Community of Westerlo, helped to restore the Town's museum, placed American flags in the cemetery for Veterans, and delivered Meals on Wheels. Alvin loved to drive his tractor, and enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, farming, carpentry work, dancing and listening to gospel and country music. Alvin lived for his grandchildren and appreciated every moment he was able to spend with them. Alvin is survived by his wife, Catherine M. "Kate" Snyder Latham; children, Kenneth A. (Susan) Latham, Karen A. (Paul) Latham-Hagen, Michael J. (Dawn) Latham, and Alicia J. (Carmine) Latham-Malanga; grandchildren, Kendra, Michael, Matthew, Jay, Brian, Nick, Katie, Morgan, Alexis, Philip and Nicholas; sisters-in-law, Nancy Latham and Anna Kuhar; brother and sister-in-law, Robert (Ruth) Snyder; several great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, grand- and great-grandnieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Alvin was predeceased by his siblings, Joyce A. Kudlack and Henry C. "Bub" Latham. Calling hours will be Saturday October 15th, from 12 -2 PM & 7-9 PM at the A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 State Route 81, Greenville. The funeral will be Sunday October 16th at 11 AM at the Westerlo Reformed Church, followed by burial in Westerlo Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Westerlo Reformed Church, PO Box 70, Westerlo, NY 12193, or any other organization in the Westerlo community of the donor's choice, will be appreciated.
