Obituary of Jean Katherine Opdycke

WESTERLO – Jean K. Farley Opdycke, age 86, peacefully went home to God on Tuesday, October 7, 2014. Born on June 2, 1928 in Washington, NJ, she was daughter of the late William W. and Katherine Castner Farley, and wife of the late Joseph C. Opdycke, who died April 27, 2001. Jean graduated from Washington High School and Ryder College. She and her husband resided in Washington for many years, until moving to Pennsylvania in 1979. They farmed there for 5 years, and came to Westerlo in 1984. Jean worked at Camp Pinnacle before becoming the secretary to Rev. Donald Lyon at First Baptist Church of Westerlo, retiring 5 years ago. Jean was a member of the church, sang in the choir, and played in the handbell choir. Jean is survived by three children, Gaye (Robert) Newbegin, Mark (Kathy) Opdycke and Dana (Barbara) Opdycke; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; one brother, William Farley; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents and husband, Jean was predeceased by her son, Joseph C. Opdycke Jr., and her grandson, Brendan Opdycke. A calling hour will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church, 618 State Route 143, Westerlo, followed by a memorial service and celebration of her life at 11 a.m. Refreshments and fellowship will follow. Burial of her ashes will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Port Murray Cemetery in New Jersey.
